Our Club

The Stuy Town Chess Club was founded in 1992.  Since then we have grown to over 100 members.  Our games take place at the chess tables in Stuyvesant Town in warm weather every afternoon and evening and indoors Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during inclement weather.

Much of our play is recreational, though we have had member tournaments and a club ladder.
We also enter teams in the Bankers' Athletic League - the oldest chess league in New York City.  This league is made up of teams from banks and financial institutions as well as several universities and invited clubs.  Members in this league range in strength all the way up to grandmaster, but our teams have always performed well.

Among our adult members, we have physicians, lawyers, CPA's teachers, computer professionals, students and many other occupations as well as retirees and just plain folks.  The club provides an outstanding opportunity to network.  The atmosphere is friendly and inviting.  One advantage to outdoor play is that kids stop by to play a game or two while skateboarding, rollerblading or playing basketball or baseball.  We've taught over 60 kids to play.  Some have shown exceptional talent.

As a club we are very committed to promoting youth chess.  Our committment is inspired by two of our founding members, GM John W. Collins and former club president Peter Kadyszewski.  We have sponsored numerous Junior Tournaments and developed the first Chess Little League in the world.  Members are available most afternoons and evenings to teach children the game of chess.
